From Bobbi Brown’s Pretty Powerful Fund to the Cartier Women’s Initiative, these luxury brands have long supported women and girls in a global fight for change

A few months back, an Instagram post caught my eye.

“Need money to start your business? Consider tapping into alternate funding solutions before relying on a bank loan.”

What caught my attention was not its content but more who posted it. It was a series of posts by the Tory Burch Foundation linking to blog content aimed at female-led small businesses, providing tips and guidance on how to start and the pitfalls to avoid.

In an age when many are increasingly disillusioned with luxury brands in an already volatile environment fuelled by career-ending viral videos and general social media outrage, it’s nice to see positive outcomes nevertheless—specifically the result of global brands aiming to empower women and girls.

From the Cartier Women’s Initiative supporting over 330 female entrepreneurs and disbursing over US$9 million since 2006 to Clé de Peau Beauté reaching 3 million girls around the world with quality STEM education, here are six brands that have invested big bucks in the betterment of women and girls.

Cartier Women’s Initiative

Cartier president and CEO Cyrille Vigneron once said, “The best thing you can do in business is to empower women. It changes everything.”

In sync with this ethos, Cartier Women’s Initiative is an annual international entrepreneurship programme dedicated to empowering women-impact entrepreneurs, specifically women-run and women-owned businesses from any country and sector that aim to have a strong and sustainable social and/or environmental impact.

Its mission is to highlight women impact entrepreneurs around the world and provide them with financial, social and human capital support to grow their business, build their leadership skills, and by extension, change their communities and the world for the better.

Clé de Peau Beauté x UNICEF

Clé de Peau Beauté, in partnership with UNICEF, has empowered over 3 million girls through its Skills4Girls initiative, which provides crucial STEM education. This program addresses gender inequality by equipping girls with skills for the 21st-century workforce. With a US$17.4 million pledge funded through sales of their best-selling skincare product, The Serum, the partnership is on track to reach 5.7 million girls globally by 2025.

“Over 90 per cent of jobs worldwide have a digital component, but options remain limited or non-existent for girls, especially adolescent girls, in these male-dominated fields,” says UNICEF director of private fundraising and partnerships, Carla Haddad Mardini. “We are thrilled to see such significant progress made in bridging the STEM gender gap in only the first year of our renewed partnership with Clé de Peau Beauté, and we look forward to continuing our work together to empower the next generation of girls.”
