Here’s what went down at the Paralympics Games’ opening ceremony on August 28
While we were sleeping, Paris came alive as the City of Lights opened the 2024 Paralympics with a vibrant ceremony.
Like this year’s opening ceremony for the Olympic Games, the Paralympic opening ceremony took place away from the main stadium, in Place de la Concorde. Blue skies were all around as the ceremony began with music and dance routines by those with and without disabilities.
The ceremony continued as 4,400 athletes from 168 delegations paraded along the famed Avenue des Champs-Elysees to celebrate the start of 11 days of competition. On top of thousands of spectators, athletes were also welcomed by Phryge mascots that danced on stage.
The ceremony ended as the cauldron was lit by five torchbearers and French Paralympians Alexis Hanquiquant, Nantenin Keita, Charles-Antoine Kouakou, Fabien Lamirault and Elodie Lorandi.
Below we share some of the best moments from the opening ceremony.
