If you have been following my blog, you will find out that, apart from providing entrepreneurs with business tips I also involve myself with teaching people how to become a web designer.
In my 2 years of building website for people, I have found most of these people I build website for are business minded; all they want is a website to promote their services; and they would do all they can to raise money to get one, even if they are start-ups.
Am so glad, I didn’t just learn how to manage businesses, but also learnt how to build websites.
Web design has become one of my businesses I manage, having built myself a website where I put my services for hire.
Won’t it be great if you know how to build a website? Then you wouldn’t need someone to manage your company website as you are there to do so.
So if you are interested in becoming a website designer and taking it to a professional level; I have compiled 7 things you will need to jump-start before you begin real web designing.
1. Good Working Environment
Make sure your working environment is neat and tidy and also have free flow of air. You won’t want to work in an environment that don’t make you feel relax. A table and a chair is needed too.
If you are looking for the right computer to buy, you can start your search with dual core, minimum 2 Gig ram, 250 Gig space to enable you install some helpful software that will aid you . You wouldn’t want to buy a low ram size computer and be faced with system slowness.
3. Pen and Paper
Every web developer needs a pen and paper, as writing some relevant codes down will become part of you.
4. Text Editor
This is a must for every aspiring web designer. Text-editors are programs that allow you write in popular codes languages like html, css,and php and translate it to a meaningful webpage. If you are finding a good text editor I highly recommend you use notepad++. With it you learn better
5. Local Server
Every web developer need to have a local host server on their computer. These enable you to view the website you are designing on your browser when you are offline, mostly when you design with php. But you shouldn’t have a problem viewing html on your browser, as your computer understand the language. Just take WordPress for example, one can actually install, design and view a WordPress site via local host. The best recommendation out there is xampp. That is the local host i use.
6. Adobe Photoshop
As a web developer having Adobe Photoshop installed on your computer is another thing that will help you, as you will need to be creating logos and banners for the website you are designing.
7. Right Learning Resources
Yes, number 1 to 6 are mainly the things you will need to get started. You now need to learn web design proper, and as to that, you will be needing materials to learn.
You can decides to spend a few buck and hire the services of a professional web designer to teach you. Or better still watch video tutorials on web designing. Alternatively you can read books/articles on web designing.
Don’t forget to take Google as your best friend too.
In all that you do, always practice. As practice makes perfect.
I wouldn’t say these are the complete list of things you need to get started with as a web designer, they are the basic. Definitely there are other advance things you would be needing, but i don’t just think you are ready for it yet.
