Make a splash into these residences’s unique pools—from a Hong Kong villa, an urban oasis in Thailand and a Malaysian penthouse, to a Moroccan-inspired countryside home in the Philippines and a house in Indonesia with not just one, but seven pools.

Private pools are a coveted feature in any home, especially in many cities across Asia, where property prices come at a premium and land is considerably scarce compared to many countries outside the continent.

Here, we look back at some of the notable homes we have featured with stunning swimming pool designs: a luxury villa in Hong Kong; a house in Bangkok, Thailand, that exemplifies the indoor-outdoor living philosophy; a penthouse in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with an infinity pool and breathtaking views; a Moroccan-inspired countryside home southeast of Manila, Philippines; and a lush home in Jakarta, Indonesia, immersed in nature atop seven picturesque tiered pools. Some take a page out of those seen in tropical resorts, while others pay homage to the design aesthetic in the home’s interiors.

It is home to an entrepreneur, his wife and their two sons. The architects’ aim was to keep the interiors as private as possible while maintaining good natural ventilation. Double-volume areas and ample connections with the external environment through glass walls, outdoor spaces and timber louvres; views of the home’s private pool, meanwhile, can be enjoyed from areas in the house’s first floor.

Nestled in the cosmopolitan neighbourhood of Sri Hartamas in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the sleek Sunway Palazzio penthouse embodies the best of urban living with a private pool and a killer view.

This three-story sanctuary, spanning an impressive 9,900 sq ft, was the work of Studio Kanta, who had been entrusted with the project by a returning client when he acquired his new property.

“For this penthouse, we designed this space with a focus on clean, crisp and chic elements. Our aim was to create a subtle, luxurious ambience that would resonate with the client’s sophisticated taste,” says Suekmei Chai, director and founder of Studio Kanta.

No one would think that at the end of a winding road on the hilly side of a quaint town in Laguna, a province southeast of Manila in the Philippines, lies a beautiful Moroccan-inspired home.

From the main highway, a steep drive brings you to a fairy-tale-like canopy of trees. An imposing gate opens to an expansive lot framed with 360-degree vistas of Laguna de Bay, the Sierra Madre Range and Mount Makiling. At this point, you will finally realise you’ve arrived.

From the property’s main gate, one must walk through a verdant garden and take a few steps down to reach the grand entrance of the spacious three-storey residence. The floor-to-ceiling louvres sway open, welcoming everyone into a terracotta-hued foyer that showcases mementoes from trips abroad—and a grand piano. To the right is a hallway that leads to the two kitchens, an al fresco dining area and a breathtaking pool deck.

Enthroned in a picturesque estate atop seven tiers of pools, this house in the Greater Jakarta area by veteran architect Budi Lim is envisioned as a series of bungalows and slices of open spaces from which its occupants can appreciate nature’s rhythm.

There are not one, not two, but seven tiered pools in this residence. The seven tiers are—from the order of the one with the highest elevation to the one closest to the street—an aquascaped pond, a swimming pool, three tiers of lotus ponds, a water lily pond and a wetland that forms part of the house’s plumbing system.
