MIRROR’s Ian Chan shares everything from his skincare routine to his dream holiday in this exclusive tête-à-tête with Tatler

It’s been six years since Ian Chan first burst onto the scene as a member of the wildly popular Cantopop boy band MIRROR. Since then, he’s proven himself to be a multi-faceted star through his vocal skills and his tireless work ethic. Whether it’s crooning sentimental love songs or passionately portraying an ice hockey player in the local TV drama Sparks, Ian has been steadily making a name for himself across music, film, and television.

Tatler sat down with Chan to discuss his dream vacation, music inspirations and upcoming exciting projects.

If you had a long vacation, where would you like to go?
I have always wanted to go to Iceland. I have been talking about it for many years but it still hasn’t happened. I hope to take a longer break so that I can just relax and explore the country by car. When I travel by myself, I prefer to take things at a leisurely pace, really soaking in the natural beauty, the culture and local ambience. I think I will love Iceland when I visit there.

Is there a song that you have been playing on repeat lately?
While finishing my make-up just now, I was listening to a classic song, L-O-V-E (1965) by Nat King Cole. I don’t know if it’s because I used to listen to it when I was a child, but then it suddenly popped into my mind. And whenever it pops into my head, I have to turn it on and listen to it again.

Where does your creative inspiration come from?
You know, I haven’t really pinpointed my primary source of creative inspiration just yet. With my schedule being so jam-packed, I don’t always have the chance to pause and reflect on just how much my creative process has evolved in recent years. Fortunately, I thrive on staying busy—both as an artist and as an individual. For the most part, I love the pace. I find I’m often composing music and lyrics even while I’m on the move.

That said, I have wondered what kind of impact a truly extended break or vacation might have on my creative output. If I could carve out a longer, more sustained period to truly relax and recharge, what sort of unique artistic works might that inspire? It’s an intriguing thought, for sure.

What is your skincare routine for the summer?
Cleansing is the most important thing in the summer. I usually wear make-up at work, and removing make-up is very important, and then moisturising the skin is crucial too. For that, I turn to my all-time favourite, Shiseido’s Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate, which I gently massage on my face with my palm. If needed, I use other skincare products on top of it.

Tell us your plans for the second half of 2024.
I really need to take a break after my solo concert [Ian Chan’s Tears in My Sight Solo Concert which took place in July]. It won’t be a long break, maybe about a week or two. Then I will continue to release new songs. There will be one song that is quite different in terms of music style, I hope you enjoy it when it drops.
