The Rebels | Serrini’s music addresses themes of identity, belonging and rebellion—themes that appear in her fashion choices, too
Serrini—who has a PhD in literary and cultural studies on top of being one of the city’s hottest recording artists—has much to offer beyond her idiosyncratic blend of folk, indie and pop music. The Hong Kong-based singer-songwriter’s career began with a passion for poetry, and she quickly made a name for herself with her unconventional songwriting as well as her sartorial uniqueness.
The independent artist, whose real name is Leung Ka-yan, started performing at small gigs and open mic sessions around Hong Kong and Taiwan. Her latest album, Rage in Peace, came out in May. Her music addresses themes of identity, belonging and rebellion—themes that appear in her fashion choices, too. She describes her sense of style as being akin to that of a drag queen, existing in a fluid state between masculinity and femininity. She is committed to using her music to inspire change, but also insistent that she enjoys herself along the way.
“I just want to have fun, and that’s my end goal—I like having fun and looking fabulous. [I don’t] worry about what other people feel—I don’t have to dumb myself down.”
