Historical epic ‘Shōgun’, which is set in Japan, becomes the first non-English language winner of the best drama series at the Emmy Awards this year
American historical drama series Shōgun created history by winning 18 awards at this year’s Emmy Awards. Announced yesterday (September 16, 2024) in Los Angeles, the series took home the Outstanding Drama Series, making it the first non-English-language series to win in this category. The two leads, Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, also became the first Japanese actors to win Best Actor and Best Actress in a Drama respectively. Japanese actor and musician Tadanobu Asano received the Best Supporting Actor for the series.

A week earlier, Shōgun had already claimed 14 Emmys at the precursor Creative Arts Emmys, breaking the record previously held by HBO’s 2008 miniseries John Adams, which had won 13 awards.
Premiered in February 2024 on FX, Shōgun depicts the warring dynasties in the late Sengoku-era Japan in 1600. “Shōgun taught me when we work together, we can make miracles,” Sanada said in his acceptance speech. “It was an East-meets-West dream project, [made] with respect.”
