Sneakers from apple waste? Check. Necklace made of fruit peels? Check. Discover the innovative ways that Hong Kong’s lifestyle brands are giving a new leash of life to food waste

In 2022, more than 3,302 tonnes of food waste were sent to landfills every day, according to the Environmental Protection Department. The recent indefinite postponement of the municipal solid waste charging scheme also raised awareness of the city's challenging waste management issue.

Some local brands have embraced a fresh approach by upcycling discarded food waste into essential products. From fashionable accessories to nutritious pet food, their innovative creations not only help reduce the overall waste generated but encourage consumers to make sustainable choices.

Here, Tatler introduces you to five ingenious and useful products, all made from food waste.

Kibo makes trendy trainers featuring apple leather, a plant-based material made from apple pomace, as well as other upcycled farm waste. Its solvent-free production process emits an average of 20 times less carbon than cow leather. Each pair of shoes is made from up to 15 repurposed apples. The brand is the brainchild of Tatler’s Gen.T honouree Natalie Chow.

The vibrant collection is made from kitchen food waste and fruit peels, including dragonfruit, carrot, orange, zucchini, butterfly pea, and eggplant. Handcrafted by young single mothers through dehydrating, grinding and mixing the food waste with vegan waste-derived resin, it symbolises females as persistent, outspoken, fierce, and authentic. The group holds jewellery-making workshops for the public to promote behavioural change to reduce food waste.

Rosewood Hong Kong worked with Ways Out Hong Kong, a brand that creates upcycled jewellery from food waste, to create a limited-edition set of upcycled wine charms, which are attached neatly to the stem of wine glasses. The charms are made with kitchen food waste—think peels from dragon fruit, carrots and oranges.

Furry Green Fresh Pet Food collects surplus vegetables from local markets and creates pet food out of them— because “our furry friends deserve to eat fresh ingredients as much as we do”, says the brand. It regularly donates its products to local shelters.

5. Breer: Craft beer

Homegrown start-up Breer, founded by Gen.T honouree Anushka Purohit, collects surplus bread from various bakeries in Hong Kong, including one of the city’s biggest bread manufacturers, Maxim’s, and brews it into craft beer. It doesn’t only work with plain old white bread, either: Breer also transforms pineapple buns into tropical-flavoured drinks.
