Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, who turns 30 at the Monza Grand Prix tomorrow, is beloved by his fans and teammates for several reasons. Here’s what you need to know about him

Carlos Sainz is the Spanish Formula 1 driver for Ferrari who has driven his way into the hearts of many a fan, whether it’s through his “smooth operating” on the track that often takes him to the podium, his sense of camaraderie with teammates and rival teams alike, or his swoon-worthy hair that looks impossibly good even after he wears a helmet.

The three-time race winner celebrates his 30th birthday at the Monza Grand Prix tomorrow, September 1—the home race of his team, no less—and to celebrate the occasion, we highlight five things you should know about Sainz.

Carlos Sainz comes from a racing family

Up until recently, Sainz was referred to as Carlos Sainz Jr, because his father, Carlos Sainz Sr, is a championship-winning rally driver who is still competing at age 62. It’s evident from Sainz’s posts on Instagram, as well as from the way he’s spoken about his dad on his YouTube channel and in interviews, just how important Sainz Sr is in his life and racing career. His manager is also a family member—cousin Carlos Oñoro Sainz, as is the Spanish tradition to share a name—who has been with him since the beginning of his career.

He has three wins to his name so far

Sainz debuted on the grid in 2015 with Toro Rosso alongside Max Verstappen, but didn’t get his first win until the 2022 Silverstone Grand Prix with driving for Ferrari in 2022—being the only driver to win a race that year besides his former teammate, who dominated that season. He followed it up with a second win at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, and most recently took the top spot in Melbourne this March for his third, and hopefully more to come.

Carlos Sainz is a jack of all trades

Sainz has a knack for picking up and excelling in hobbies outside of racing, and he often shares his progress online. An avid golfer, proficient cook, football fanatic and cycling enthusiast—it’s only a matter of time before he picks something else up and begins to share that too.

He doesn’t have an appendix

In March this year, Sainz underwent surgery to get his appendix removed. Some might say this even gave him a slight edge at the Melbourne Grand Prix later that month because he was ever-so-slightly lighter, but we firmly believe he won through his driving abilities alone and not because of the absence of his appendix.

Carlos Sainz has multiple nicknames

Sainz has explained in previous interviews that he got the nickname Chilli from friends in his early racing days who called him Carlos, then Charlie and eventually Chilli. It’s evolved into his fanbase using the nickname too, and he’s incorporated the motif into merch as well as his own helmets. Sainz is also referred to as the “smooth operator” by his team, pundits and fans, referring to the 1984 hit of the same name by Sade, which he often sings with his team after a good drive.
