Long gone are the days when the scariest security breach of your business involved someone breaking in during the night and stealing the phones and the computers. Today’s security breaches mostly happen online and they can happen to anyone. If you think that you are safe just because your business is not huge, you are very much mistaken. Everyone is at danger of cyber-attacks and you need to understand the importance of cyber-security for your business.
How they can hurt you
There are a number of reasons how a cyber-breach of any kind is going to hurt your business. First of all, someone might get in possession of your sensitive data that might even include information about your clients and/or customers. They might even get financial data that they can directly use to hurt you or harm you indirectly. You will also lose the trust of the people that you work with if you happen to lose data that is sensitive for them. When your employees’ social accounts are hacked, this can also lead to loss of sensitive information. In addition to this, you need to understand that your entire business will be down for a specific period of time until the effects of the breach are understood and mitigated.
Who will hurt you
The attacks can come from a variety of sources. It is relatively unlikely that you will be attacked by hacktivists unless your industry is somehow connected to a field in which they might be interested. You are far more likely to be attacked by hackers looking for purely financial gain. The newest threat in the cyber world are the social engineers whose name does not sound nearly as daunting as their nature is.
Social engineers are the modern equivalent of conmen of days past in that they present themselves as friends and acquaintances only to later take advantage of a new relationship that they established with an employee of a certain company. This and other human errors amount for a relatively large percentage of all data breaches and they need to be addressed by anyone who wants to be serious about their cybersecurity.
What you can do
Your defense against cyber breaches needs to be overwhelming and multilayered. First of all, you need to start employing the latest in security software if you can afford it. Do not skimp on software security measures. In addition to this, you might even hire some professionals who will take care of your IT security.
The most important thing to do, however, is to educate your employees about this issue. They need to understand what they should and should not do. They need to understand that they cannot share their passwords and access to various parts of your cyber-system. They need to understand that they cannot leave their workplace logged in and that they need to be very apprehensive of any advances from outside that have anything to do with your system.
Your cyber-security is becoming more and more important as time goes by and it can safely be said that it is already the most essential security issue in modern world of business. The best thing that you can do is prevent any attacks or at least make it difficult for potential attackers to harm your system and consequently your business.
